What I collect
Your email address. That is the only thing the signup forms ask for — there is no name field, no country field, nothing else.
Two systems record a little activity on top of that. BookFunnel records that a book was delivered to your address, so it can send it again if the file goes missing. EmailOctopus records whether an email was opened and whether a link inside it was clicked, which is how I know whether anyone is reading what I send.
If you write to me directly, I have whatever you chose to put in that email, for as long as the message sits in my inbox.
Why I collect it
To send you The Difference, and to tell you when a book is published. Nothing else. There is no advertising audience built from this list, and nothing here is passed to anyone for marketing.
Who else handles it
Three companies touch the address, each for one job:
- EmailOctopus (Three Hearts Digital Ltd, United Kingdom) holds the list and sends the mail — their privacy policy.
- BookFunnel (BookFunnel LLC, United States) delivers the free story and passes the address to the list — their privacy policy.
- Cloudflare (United States) serves this website.
None of them has permission to use your address for their own purposes.
Where it is stored
I write from Japan. The list itself lives on EmailOctopus’s systems in the United Kingdom, and BookFunnel’s delivery records live in the United States. If you are subscribing from somewhere else, your address is stored outside your own country.
How long I keep it
Until you leave. Unsubscribing removes you from the list. If you would rather be erased entirely, including the delivery record, ask me and I will do it and confirm when it is done.
Leaving, and your rights
Every email I send carries an unsubscribe link at the bottom, and it works immediately. Beyond that, you can ask me what I hold about you, ask me to correct it, ask me to delete it, or object to my using it at all. Write to cj@cjashworth.com and you will hear back from a person.
Cookies and tracking
This site sets no cookies of its own. There is no analytics, no advertising pixel, and no tracking script — the one piece of code on the page is a small Cloudflare routine that hides my email address from scrapers. The BookFunnel and EmailOctopus pages you pass through when you sign up set their own cookies, described in their policies above.
Children
These are adult novels and this list is not intended for anyone under 16. If a child has signed up, write to me and I will delete the address.
Changes
If this changes, the new version goes up here with a new date. If the change is significant, I will say so in an email rather than let you find it.
Who to contact
CJ Ashworth — cj@cjashworth.com. A postal address appears in the footer of every email I send.
Effective 5 September 2026.
